Windows 8 support

Postby dengfengsoft » Sat Apr 14, 2012 5:02 pm

We were asked if Phidgets 21 libraries are compatible with Windows 8. We currently don't have Windows 8 , has anyone ever used them in Windows 8?

Yes, I've installed in Windows 8 Preview and they work fine.

Of course - this is the x86 version. We will need to create a separate release to support the ARM tablet version.

I'm unable to get the Phidget Kit on Windows 8 to fire the Sensor Change or Analog Input events when they change, but the do fire on Windows XP. How can I fix this?

Portions of my Code are Below:

'Be Able to Read the Phidget Sensors using Events
Dim WithEvents phidgetIfk As Phidgets.InterfaceKit

Private Sub phidgetIFK_Attach1(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Phidgets.Events.AttachEventArgs) Handles phidgetIfk.Attach

''Dynamically create checkboxes for inputs, add the click event handler and

My.Settings.RecentLog += " Phidget Attached " & Date.Now.ToString & vbLf
My.Settings.Save()
End Sub

Private Sub phidgetIFK_Detach1(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Phidgets.Events.DetachEventArgs) Handles phidgetIfk.Detach
'txtStatus.Text = "Not Connected"
My.Settings.RecentLog += " Phidget Detached " & Date.Now.ToString & vbLf
My.Settings.Save()
End Sub

Private Sub phidgetIFK_Error1(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Phidgets.Events.ErrorEventArgs) Handles phidgetIfk.Error
My.Settings.RecentLog += " Phidget ERROR " & Date.Now.ToString & vbLf
My.Settings.Save()
'MessageBox.Show(e.Description)
Me.Close()
End Sub

Private Sub phidgetIFK_InputChange1(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Phidgets.Events.InputChangeEventArgs) Handles phidgetIfk.InputChange
'input_checkboxes(e.Index).Checked = e.Value
Dim testwes = 10
testwes = 5
End Sub

Private Sub phidgetIFK_SensorChange(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Phidgets.Events.SensorChangeEventArgs) Handles phidgetIfk.SensorChange
'sensor_textboxes(e.Index).Text = e.Value
Try
For index = 0 To 7
If index = e.Index Then
phidgetSensors.Item(index).PhidgetValue = e.Value
End If
Next
'PhidgetSensorDictionary("Sensor" & e.Index.ToString) = e.Value

My.Settings.RecentLog += " Phidget Sensor Change " & e.Index.ToString & " Value " & e.Value & " " & Date.Now.ToString & vbLf
My.Settings.Save()
Catch ex As Exception

End Try

End Sub

Phidgets do not work on Windows 8 RT or Windows Store Apps (formerly known as Metro) because those apps do not have access to the full .Net Framework, so when you try to build your app after referencing the the phidgets21.Net.dll you will get an error similar to:

Cannot find type System.Collections.CollectionBase in module mscorlib.dll

So as long as you do not want to try and create a Windows Store app then you can use Windows 8 just fine, just requires access to the full .Net Framework.

Would be great to get another version of the dll from phidgets that supports Windows Store Apps.

Would be even more great if Microsoft actually included full .NET support, I'm still a bit baffled about why they did this.

We will have to release a new .NET library - but there's no telling when this will be ready. For now you won't be able to target Phidgets in windows store apps.

My employer has bought quite a few of your spatial sensor boards. We need an RT driver or will have to look for other options. Do you have any kind of timeline?

No, there are no current plans to release an RT library. It might happen eventually but it is a long way off.
