8/8/8 drops offline

Postby Norm_L » Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:18 am

My 8/8/8 drops off line every couple of days and I have to unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in again. It is plugged into a USB 1.1 cat5e Extender. The sender part of the extender is plugged directly into the computer.

I see in the Product Manual for the USB Isolator that it lists the 1018 - Phidget InterfaceKit 8/8/8 as a high speed USB 2.0 device;

Could plugging the 1018 into a 1.1 USB device cause these or other problems?

Possibly, but it could also be a power issue. What is attached to the 8/8/8? Can you add a powered USB hub at the end of the extender to avoid voltage drops?

I use a USB Power Injector that feeds a regulated 5vdc to the 8/8/8. I had to do this as any more then two relays ON (I have 8) would cause all the relays to go off. This was due to the voltage drop over the ethernet cable.

The 8/8/8 was working OK with the power injector but now drops offline intermittently. I have to unplug the USB cable and reconnect it.

I have 8 relays, a temp & voltage and light sensor. I use 7 of the 8 inputs for position sensors (reed switches).

Are you powering the relays off the 8/8/8, or directly from your 5v supply? Does it drop off when the relays are powered on? The USB 1.1 extender should be fine - the 8/8/8 is USB 2.0, but full-speed, which is part of USB 1.1.

Would you be able to enable logging in your application? There may be some clues around the detach time.

The relays are powered from the 8/8/8 but the 8/8/8 is powered from the USB power injector 5vdc. There was too much of a voltage drop with the distance I am operating the 8/8/8.

All the relays work fine, I can have all 8 on at the same time without the 8/8/8 dropping offline.

I looked at the system logs and all that is shown is when a relay is activated and when a sensor is read. No faults are indicated. Does PhidgetsOSA have it's own log somewhere?

It's possible to turn on logging in the library, but this can't be enabled from AppleScript.

Does Phidgets have it's own log and if so is there an option to turn in the Phidgets GUI?

Library logging is enable via an API call - but I didn't add this call to the PhidgetsOSA library for some reason.

When the 8/8/8 drops off, is it completely gone - ie. doesn't show up in the Phidgets control panel anymore? If this is not a voltage issue, then it may be an interference issue, or it could be that the extender you are using just isn't stable, it's really hard to say. These extenders usually work ok, but they are definitely bending the electrical rules of the USB spec.

Can you add the Library Logging?

I'll check to see if it is still in the Phidgets control panel next time it fails.

I do know that when it fails and I run the main.scpt to load the handlers I keep a false as the board is not attached until I remove & re-insert the USB cable.

The 8/8/8 is dropping off line daily now and I have to reset the USB connection to get it back online.

Could you write a small C program I could run from the Terminal to turn on the Logging? I really need to get this sorted.

thanks
