GPS with the SBC3

Postby morgan » Fri Mar 14, 2014 2:51 pm

So now I'm interested in tracking my phidget's GPS location.
Does anyone have a cheap GPS receiver that works with the SBC3?

Thanks

We sell the 1040 - PhidgetGPS which will work.

You should also be able to use many USB GPSes that work with Linux - depends on the USB serial driver they use.

Okay here's the weird thing, i bought the GPS 1040 VER101, and it works great on my work laptop dell windows 7 64. However my home pc, Windows 10 64, and on my SBC3 board, i cannot detect the GPS unit when it's plugged in.

Is this a known issue? i have a feeling this unit is defective. any idea?

It's unusual that it would work on one but not the other. Do you have any other Phidgets that you can try to plug into the windows PC or SBC to determine whether it's the GPS or the platform that's at fault? Can you access the InterfaceKit on the SBC?

After plugging into the SBC, can you have a look at the system logs page and see if there are any USB related messages?

I can do that later tonight, yes absolutely.

funny enough, i just plugged it back into my work laptop and now it's saying unrecognized USB device. i'm wondering if this sensor was bad, and maybe my laptop was just on the edge of working....

do you have a way i can return for repair?

(Oh!! i got it to work again on my laptop.... it's very flakey. i will check the logs tonight on the SBC3).

Something else to try would be a different USB cable.

okay here we go... multiple USB cables tried, on multiple USB ports.... and multiple computers...

I tried by plugging my phidget thermocouple sensor in... leaving the USB connected to the SBC3, then plugging in the GPS unit. The phidget GPS led will blink once, and remain off.

Basically after the temp sensor disconnect, no action in the logs at all...

Sometimes when i plug it in to my desktop, it lights up blinking, but Phidget Control Panel will never see it. Right now, it will not light up blinking... it's doing the same thing on my desktop as it did with the SBC3.

Same cable exactly, just plugged in to my laptop. The GPS unit is working! it's flashing and is found by Phidget Control Panel...

I think i have a very defective unit... please help!!

Also i can say, it seems like my PC doesn't even see a new USB device when it's plugged in.
Perhaps a trigger voltage issue, to turn the internal chip on??? i'm just guessing here...

Thanks,
Morgan

Hold up... Attached to the SBC it started to flash.... I guess that means it has a signal. But still nothing in the logs... no PhigetGPS to be found...
