1012 (0/16/16) speed - reliable update rate?

Postby Stfno » Tue Aug 04, 2009 2:54 pm

Hi,

I want to use a 1012 - interfaceKit 0/16/16 - to generate a fast signal...

Basically I need to drive a "stereo display" where a single signal changes 120 times per second (0 to 1 to 0 to 1 to 0 to 1 to etc - using +5/ground TTL).

I checked the specs of the 1012 and it says the DIGITAL OUTPUT UPDATE RATE ~= 125 changes/sec.

So I guess this should work, but I was wonder how reliable is the update rate? do you always get 125 changes/sec? or does the usb interface lags sometimes? or do you get slowdowns? Can i get a reliable timing?

If anyone know or has an comments or knows of a better phidget interface please please let me know.

Many Thanks. :D

That's an average rate - but because of USB, there will be glitches in the stream as your computer is busy doing other things. I assume you would need a fairly uniform pulse-train.

I can reduce the pulse to 100Hz but thats still fast.

Is there another phidget interface I can use to generate the pulse (100 to 120Hz uniform)?

Many Thanks.

I don't think so, I think what you need is dedicated hardware to drive the signal - there's too much latency in USB to drive it directly without buffering or anything.
