Relay protection

Postby spider » Sat Dec 06, 2008 4:23 pm

I am wanting to use a 0/0/4 to handle a 600 W HID light, humidifier/dehumidifier, heater and air conditioner. Could someone please provide advice on how to protect the relay contacts i.e. MOV, TVS diode et al. I would be appreciative of a part number and how to hook them up. I presume the board tracks can handle the specified 10 amps/110 volt with all four relays conducting.

Also, I want to use 4 x 3051's to switch 4Watt/12v solenoids. Do I need protection there as well? Same data would be appreciated.

An 8/8/8 will do all the PC interface stuff.

Oh, and will I need a powered USB hub to run all this?

Whew!!

Many thanks

Typically you can just put the MOV / TVS directly across the contacts. It's difficult to effectively protect the contacts. It sounds like your application is pretty serious, and it could chew through the relay contacts pretty quickly.

You may want to consider wiring commercially available SSRs directly to the digital outputs of your 888. A serious SSR should last a really long time.
