How does one go about installing the new 1.0.4 firmware version? None of the documentation I have been able to lay my hands on describes this process in detail.

Open the web configurations page for the SBC. System->Upgrade.

I copied the file phidgetsbc2_1.0.1.20120106.bin
to a usb thumb drive on my mac (drive is formated as fat16)

No suitable upgrade files were found. Please attach as USB drive containing supported upgrade file(s) and reload this page.
...Upgrade packages containing both (phidgetsbc2-*.bin)

Is there another file that should be on the flash drive?

Yes, this is an unfortunate quick in the upgrade system.

if you rename:
it will show up properly and you can do the upgrade.
