Whenever I have a webcam plugged into the SBC2 for a "long" period of time (two days straight) everything connected through USB crashes. The problem occurs with both webcams tested - different types - Quickcam Pro 5000 and the Phidgets 3402_0 webcam. dmesg returns the following:

The problem goes away when I unplug the webcam.

The crashes seem to be happening for the most part, at 6:25am which is when the /etc/cron.daily/ scripts are run, but I did not see anything in there that looks like it would be tinkering with any USB devices.

Anyone have any suggestions?

This could be related to a hardware bug in the USB layout. You can try to run the webcam through an external hub - if it starts working properly then this is probably the issue.

Are you sure that the USB-serial adapter isn't the culprit?

We experienced this same problem using a couple different FTDI serial adaptor and a couple different pl2303s too - that's not to say that both ftdi AND pl2303 don't cause the problem.

Is the hardware USB bug fixed in the newer production of the SBC2? It would be nice to find boards that don't have the problem.

Is there a fix I can do for this? I saw on viewtopic.php?f=39&t=5114&p=19215 you say soldering a capacitor will fix this. Is this the same bug you're talking about? If so, where can I find the instructions for fixing it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, this is the bug I'm talking about. We'll be releasing an app-note on this issue, but in the meantime, you can contact support@phidgets.com for instructions. We will also do a repair.

The fix is implemented for all boards being sold from now on.
